ViaSat acquires WildBlue for $568 million; companies hope merge will strengthen broadband stimulus applications
Satellite communications equipment maker ViaSat (News - Alert) has announced it will pay $568 million to acquire WildBlue Communications, a satellite Internet service provider.
The firms, which applied for $500 million in broadband stimulus money, hope the merger will boost their chances of getting those grants, the Denver Post reported. Those close to the deal said WildBlue’s customers will enjoy faster Internet; the Post reported services will eventually ride on a high-bandwidth satellite that Carlsbad, Calif.-based ViaSat plans to launch in 2011...
